In The Beginning                                                    Last updated 13/07/2009 03:54:09 PM

Every one needs a starting point. My interest developed from a lady with a CLEAN beautiful violet. Before this I felt sorry for the dusty looking dirty african violets thinking it was a pity to have such beautiful flowers over a very dusty blanket of leaves. Then one day a lady showed me her plants and I discovered they could be kept clean.  There was no stopping my love affair with african violets since then.    My references, were the lady of course and an Ernest Fishers booklet that came with my first "light garden". Soon I found a Sunset book on how to grow African Violets.

The coloured pictures, experiences and adjustments are my own except where otherwise stated. I started off with one light garden. A three tier stand approximately 24"X48" with fluorescent lights and now have ten.  I cannot use the bottom shelves because of my injure.  Ninette starts seedlings there for our garden.     In the beginning I haunted the store shelves here in Thunder Bay. I came home with any violet that looked a bit different than the ones I already had. I was quite pleased when they responded to my love and attention with little surprises like frilly petal edges, or blossoms edged in white, some even splashed with purple. "Traits" they didn't show until they were well established in my light gardens. I couldn't stop here though I searched until I found a mail order source for
hybrid african violets. I purchased  by description only and am very happy with each of them. I especially like the double flowering and variegated types.
